{"id":46,"date":"2014-04-17T06:25:58","date_gmt":"2014-04-17T10:25:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chemreview.net\/blog\/?page_id=46"},"modified":"2026-03-18T12:49:57","modified_gmt":"2026-03-18T16:49:57","slug":"resources","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/chemreview.net\/blog\/?page_id=46","title":{"rendered":"Textbook"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Textbooks and Supplements<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Don Dahm and Eric Nelson have authored two textbooks that apply cognitive principles to teaching calculations in chemistry: <em>Calculations in Chemistry &#8212; An Introduction<\/em>, and <em>Calculations in Chemistry &#8212; General Chemistry<\/em>.\u00a0 The contents are described below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Calculations &#8212; Introduction<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Calculations in Chemistry \u2013 An Introduction<\/em> is a textbook that applies findings of cognitive research to teaching chemistry.\u00a0 Published by W. W. Norton, the text is designed to serve as a stand-alone text in college Preparatory Chemistry and a supplement in first-semester General Chemistry and GOB Chemistry.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Results<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a recent report in the <em>Journal of\u00a0 Chemical Education<\/em>, Dr. Peter Craig at McDaniel College reported on his use of the <em>Calculations<\/em> text for homework readings and problems in General Chemistry.\u00a0 In the first year of his adoption, his students\u2019 scores on the ACS General Chemistry Examination rose by over 20 percentiles, to above the 60<sup>th<\/sup> percentile.<\/p>\n<p>His \u201cbefore\u201d (blue) and \u201cafter\u201d (red) results are here:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ChemReview.Net\/CraigGraph.gif\" alt=\"CraigResults\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The detailed report by Dr. Craig is at\u00a0 <em>J.
